URGENT: Foster Homes Needed for Four Young Lab Mixes

Dog Lover - Thursday, May 31, 2012

Grateful Dogs Rescue has an URGENT need for foster homes for three female and one male Weinaramer/Lab mixes from a cruelty case. They had been locked up in a cage and starved. They need further socialization of city life and the outdoors, but have come a long way with the help of volunteers. They are fourteen months old and 2-4 foster homes are needed or even another rescue who can take them.

Harry loves fetching squeaky toys while Katie is very affectionate. Katie is currently limping but there are no broken bones and should be back to normal with rest. Annie is the most submissive of the three but does well on her walks outside. Rose is very outgoing in the kennel but the most skittish on her outside walks though she's improved simply within the second walk.

To foster one or more of these dogs, contact Grateful Dogs Rescue at 415 587 1121 or email info@gratefuldogsrescue.org. Fill out a foster application at http://gratefuldogsrescue.org/foster-application

Grateful Dogs Rescue pays for all medical. And if your GDR foster dog needs training help, GDR can provide that, too.

If you are willing to foster either Harry, Annie, Rose, or Katie, please fill out a foster application here: http://gratefuldogsrescue.org/FosterADogWithGratefulDogsRescue

Found Dog | Friendly Fluffy Female Maltese

Dog Lover - Monday, May 28, 2012

From a Grateful Dogs Rescue volunteer:

"A friend had a smallish, friendly, female, fluffy maltese mix follow
he and his pooch home Friday. She's around ten pounds and wearing a
green cloth collar. He left for a cruise Saturday morning and his
housemate is caring for the dog before taking it to ACC
Tuesday to see if she's chipped. He doesn't mind caring for her for a
bit; but, it wouldn't be a permanent placement as he also has a small
 dog."

If you or anyone you know is missing a dog matching this description, contact Grateful Dogs Rescue at info @ gratefuldogsrescue.org and we'll be glad to put you in touch with our volunteer.

Grateful Dogs Rescue Needs A Foster Home For Patty

Dog Lover - Friday, May 25, 2012

Grateful Dogs Rescue loves, loves, loves this sweet, shy two-year-old 50-lb (or so) dog who arrived at the shelter with her two puppies who were already about the same size as Mom. She deserves to be out of the shelter ASAP and GDR is looking for someone in the San Francisco Bay Area to foster her until an adoptive home can be found.

  This is Patty

Sherman Has A New Home!

Dog Lover - Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Sherman found a wonderful new home at the Sports Basement adoption event. It was so hard for the wonderful Grateful Dogs Rescue volunteer who fostered him back to good health after he was returned to Grateful Dogs Rescue - she will miss him terribly. This is one charming dog. Here he is on his way to his new forever home.

Sherman is a nine year-old dachshund/rat terrier mix who was adopted from Grateful Dogs Rescue nine years ago and then recently surrendered back to us – fat, with overgrown toenails, a mouth full of bad teeth, and never seen by a vet even once in all those years. But he's now had major dental work done, shaping up on a diet of low-cal kibble instead of junk food and tons of exercise (slimmed down to about fifteen pounds) and now has theperfect home he deserves after all the dues he's paid.

Here's what some of the GDR volunteers had to say about Sherman.

"Good luck, little funny face! I'll miss you SO much! Congratulations on your newest adventure and the best of luck to you and your new forever family! We'll always love you buddy! ♥"

"So happy for the Sherminator!! I'll miss seeing that face."

Meet Mocha | A Beautiful Sharpei Mix Dog

Dog Lover - Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Mocha was rescued from the San Francisco Animal Care and Control shelter and is in foster care with a Grateful Dogs Rescue volunteer. She will be posted on the Grateful Dogs Rescue PetFinder site soon.

There has been lots of discussion about her breed. Here is one comment from a Grateful Dogs Rescue volunteer.

"I have seen enough known Sharpei crosses to say there is for sure Sharpei in there – you can tell by some key characteristics in conformation, coat texture and pigment that seem to dominate when you cross them. But what the rest is, who knows? As much as I am not into Sharpei, mixes thereof often come out really neat and exotic looking and I tend to really like them :-) Beautiful!"

Check back to our website for more details and photos of Mocha when available. If you are interested in adopting Mocha, please fill out an adoption application.

Grateful Dogs Rescue is Looking for Someone To Adopt Jetta – A Small Female Rat Terrier / Chihuahua Mix Dog

Dog Lover - Monday, May 14, 2012

Jetta was rescued from the San Francisco Animal Care and Control shelter where she was at risk of euthanization through no fault of her own. She is currently being fostered by a Grateful Dogs Rescue volunteer, who wrote the following paragraphs about Jetta. If you would be interested in adopting this great little dog, please fill out an adoption application at http://gratefuldogsrescue.org/adoption-application

Jetta is such a gentle and wise soul. She is about two years old – a momma dog – who raised four wonderful pups with devotion. Jetta is fun, silly, easy going, a couch potato, a hiker, a beach dog, she loves to do fun obedience things, playful with dogs, toys and people she knows, cuddly, she likes to be wherever you are. She is a quiet dog, gentle and honest. Jetta is usually timid when she meets someone for the first time, but warms up quickly.

Jetta is well trained, walks well on leash in a harness or collar, does not drag, her recall is fantastic, she even comes when called away from play. She can sit, come, heel, stay, watch me, align right next to your left leg, she can drop and leave it, she knows lets go, load up (car), unten (means to sit in the passenger leg room or behind the front seat in the car), she is good with car rides, she can settle on her bed (go to you bed). She benefits from settling on her bed, when she feels insecure about things. It gives her time to settle internally and then go from there. She has a positive association toward her bed.

Nail clipping and bathing is a breeze. She is friendly, yet shy at the vet. Jetta can stay at home for about 4 - 6 hours. She can easily live with other animals, enjoys being around other nice dogs, cats, horses she does not mind, nor cows. Jetta does not mind being around children, she lets them pet her, but I would not recommend for her to move into a busy household with children. Altogether she is really awesome dog, who will be the best companion.

Jetta feels best, most relaxed and full of joy when she is outdoors. She learns best outdoors using positive reinforcement, treats or cuddles. Her weaknesses can become her strengths. She used to be submissive and roll on her back, but now the rolling is comfort and trust for her. She offers a lot, which you can turn into skills.

Jetta seems more insecure indoors, but at the same time she is fine with all the sounds and day to day activities in the household. She does not mind loud talking, music, thunderstorms. Well, ok, she is not a friend of the vacuum cleaner. If you give it a bit more practice, she will be ok. At our house she went from hiding to following us around in a distance during the vacuuming. But that's not unusual for dogs. She likes wearing her jackets, sticks her head right in, because they keep her warm :o)

If you are a kind person, couple, active, like the outdoors, patient and fun loving you will enjoy this beautiful girl. Happy woofs from Jetta- she is pretty much PERFECT!

Foster or Adopt Tinkerbelle | A San Francisco Rescue Dog

Dog Lover - Sunday, May 13, 2012
Grateful Dogs Rescue needs a San Francisco Bay area foster or adoptive home for Tinkerbelle, a medium sized adult female Pit Bull Terrier.

Lovely Tinkerbelle was placed in her current home back in January of 2009. Sadly, Tinkerbelle's adopter has decided she needs a new home because of some big life changes he is making. We are looking for either a foster home for Tink, or a new adopter that can commit to keeping Tinkerbelle for the rest of her life. This girl really deserves a forever home.
Tinkerbelle is a a mature dog, but still active. She is about 6 years old now and has been living the past 3 years with her adopter on a sailboat in the Berkeley Marina. Tinkerbelle is a sweet, sweet girl that just loves people and has enjoyed her life on the boat because she has been able to spend so much time with her person. Tinkerbelle has a very gentle way about her. She has always adored children and would be fine to live with kids of any age. Tink is very interested in chasing squirrels and shows a high interest in cats so she would be best in a feline free home, but would love a yard where she could safely be on squirrel patrol :).

A wonderful ambassador, Tink enjoys giving everyone kisses and will greet you at the door with a strong wiggley hello! She is easy to please with a treat and very food motivated. Tinkerbelle still has plenty of energy and bounce and enjoys a good game of fetch. Fully crate and potty-trained, Tink would be a wonderful match for any family with a lot of love and lots of kids (or just one kid!). An adult-only home would also of course be fine, as long as she has the opportunity for plenty of time together with her person or family!

If you are interested in fostering or adopting Tinkerbelle, please complete our online application (click here)

Grateful Dogs Rescue Needs A Foster Home For Fred

Dog Lover - Saturday, May 12, 2012

Can you give a dog a temporary home to save its life? Meet Fred. Grateful Dogs Rescue needs a foster home for this dog who is at risk of euthanization at the San Francisco Animal Care and Control shelter.

Fred is a sturdy, short-haired tan chihuahua who weights about twelve pounds. He greeted the Grateful Dogs Rescue evaluator in his kennel with tail wagging and curious sniffs. Fred pooped and peed shortly after getting outside, was good on his leash and fairly confident outside – but wary of strangers (not unfriendly). This little dog was alright being picked up and touched and when he got back to the kennel after a walk, he jumped into the Grateful Dogs Rescue volunteer's lap and licked my face. Fred doesn't seem particularly dog reactive but he did bark at a big lab who barked at him.

If you can foster Fred, please click here to fill out a foster application.
