A Foster Home Is Needed For Gus

Dog Lover - Wednesday, April 04, 2012

Gus is a delightful Dachshund mix. He is about two to three years old, with a heart of gold – but Gus behaves and looks older. He's gentle, shy at first, but quickly warms up and gains confidence with people around him. This friendly dog will thrive in a home that will give him lots of exercise, TLC and love. A calm environment is preferred for Gus, he loves cuddling under blankets in bed, and a backyard with a doggy door is a huge plus (loud or sudden noises frighten him, and he will bark if he is afraid or feels unsafe (i.e. rain/thunder/lightening, street noises, mail carriers). At about thirteen pounds, Gus is mostly house-trained. He would be fine with other dogs, but would need to be in a home with older children, due to his shyness.

Gus is high-spirited, attentive, gentle and playful, dependent on others, and very people-centered. Gus would not do well if left home alone for long periods, but would love lots of exercise, occasional cheese and playtime. All Gus needs is another chance, and he will be your best friend forever. Grateful Dogs Rescue Video

Dog Lover - Tuesday, April 03, 2012

When Pawtrero Bath House and Feed Co. and City Dogs / Bernie's Grooming hosted a Grateful Dogs Rescue adoption event in March, we met Gretchen Burley who came out to the event to learn about Grateful Dogs Rescue and make a film report for her college project. Here is the resulting video she sent us.

Shot and edited by Gretchen Burley – a Multimedia Communications major at the Academy of Art University.

Angus Is In A Foster Home.

Dog Lover - Tuesday, April 03, 2012

Angus is a happy, very handsome guy who weighs twenty-one pounds and is about two years old. Grateful Dogs Rescue moved him from the San Francisco Animal Care and Control shelter to a boarding situation – but now he is in a foster home and they might or are likely to adopt him. We're so happy for Angus.

All About The Pet Food Express "My Mutt" Donation Program

Dog Lover - Sunday, March 25, 2012

Grateful Dogs Rescue has benefitted from the Pet Food Express "My Mutt" program and many GDR adopters have been proud to have their dogs and donations highlighted in the Pet Food Express stores via this program. Via the Pet Food Express website, we're pleased to share details of the program with you here.

The “My Mutt” program helps pet rescues and pet shelters throughout the Bay Area. It’s actually a simple process and makes a great gift for a family member or friend.

All you have to do is make a donation of at least $250.00 to a non-profit rescue or shelter of your choice (donations must be within the same calendar year as the My Mutt application)  . This would be in addition to adoption fees. Your donation should be sent directly to the organization that you are supporting, not Pet Food Express. We just need proof of your donation via a receipt .

Pet Food Express will hire a professional pet photographer to arrange a photo shoot of your adorable critter.
When you choose an image, we will blow up the photo to poster size and will put it on display in the store of your choosing. You get to see your “celebrity” pet every time you shop for food and supplies. Next time you are in one of our stores, you can check out all the wonderful pictures of people’s pets on the walls and in the windows.

Number one, people love seeing their pets larger than life on the walls and in the windows of the stores. Not to mention, people love sending their friends and family to the stores to see their baby’s photo!”, Shani Russell, Web master for Pet Food Express, said. “Number two, it also brings donation money directly to the shelters that are always in need of funding.”

Partnering with Northern California Pet Adoption, these photos are our way of celebrating these wonderful animals and also a means of helping the rescue organizations and shelters who do the tireless front line work of finding homes for animals in need.

Those who donate $250.00 or more will see their poster displayed in the store for six months, and for a donation of $500.00 or more, the image will be up for a year.

Contact mymutt@petfoodexpress.com for more information or visit the Pet Food Express website at http://www.petfoodexpress.com/giving-back/make-your-pet-a-star/

Hedgie Is An Oddball And He Wants You To Adopt Him

Dog Lover - Thursday, March 08, 2012
Hedgie is a small, male chihuahua / terrier mix who is currently being fostered by a Grateful Dogs Rescue volunteer after he was rescued from San Francisco Animal Care and control. Read all about this great little dog below.

There is an extra-terrestrial in our midst, and his name is Hedgie. This little oddball may pass as a dog but honestly, sometimes we think: not so much. (And Hedgie probably agrees!) Don't look too closely, and let's say he's a chihuahua/terrier mix, 11-12 in Earth years and 13 pounds, assuming the laws of gravity pertain to him.

Hedgie dropped from the skies and was found hiding underneath a bush, scared out of his wits to find himself amongst our species. Taken to the shelter to be reclaimed by the spaceship that never arrived, poor Hedgie became even more lost and terrified. A kind rescuer took him in, and ever so gradually Hedgie has been trying to adapt to our ways.

His strange rolling gait, his wheezes and snorts and snores, his unique version of a Bad Hair Day (his coat is actually quite beautiful and multi-hued), and especially his eerie humanoid eyes distinguish this fur-covered barrel with legs. (Am I the only one who sees a resemblance to Rodney Dangerfield?)

Though he lives with dogs, Hedgie could take them or leave them. He would like to dispense with stairs, leash walks, fast-moving people, strange noises or any commotion whatsoever. For these reasons, Hedgie's forever home will need to be adults only. Overall he is super-sensitive in many ways and needs a doting, patient, gentle adopter who will protect him and accept -- no, cherish Hedgie for the quirky creature that he is. If you are open to putting aside conventional expectations, here's your chance to share your life with a one-of-a-kind companion and forge a true interspecies bond. Celebrate more than diversity -- celebrate other-worldliness!

If you are interested in adopting Hedgie, please complete the online adoption application. A Grateful Dogs Rescue volunteer will get back to you to discuss a potential match to you and Hedgie. Adoptions are local, confined to the SF Bay Area.

Can't adopt Hedgie? Please consider making a donation to sponsor him,  click here to donate.

Luke Wants Someone To Adopt Him

Dog Lover - Friday, March 02, 2012

Luke is a small adult male poodle/cockapoo mix who is currently in foster care with a Grateful Dogs Rescue volunteer but is looking for his forever home.

Luke is so cute! He is a sweet and affectionate little guy with a lot of love to share. He is about about severn years old and is most likely a poodle mix, weighing about twenty pounds. Luke has a lot of energy and loves going to the dog park everyday to chase balls and to run, run, run!

When at home, he will cuddle up right next to you when he feels safe, but he needs to get to know you first, which may take a little bit of time. Little Luke gets anxious when left alone (he can be destructive and crating isn't an option), so he really needs a special someone who can devote some time and effort to help him feel safe and loved. It will be worth it as he is truly a wonderful dog who will give you so much love in return. A guardian who is home often or someone who can take him along, a dog walker/trainer, would be ideal.

He is very good on leash and is a super intelligent little dog. Luke loves other dogs; in fact a home with another small dog would be imperative as it makes him very happy to have a doggie friend and helps with his anxiety. In his foster home he lives with a small terrier and they play together all day! A home without children is required.

Click here lto see other available dogs. Grateful Dogs Rescue incurs substantial medical and other costs in rescuing our dogs. In order to recoup some of these costs, GDR must charge an adoption fee. The adoption fee for Luke is $200.

If you are interested in adopting Luke, please complete our online adoption application and a Grateful Dogs Rescue volunteer will get back to you. Adoptions are local, confined to the San Francisco Bay Area.

A Common Question: Why Do I Have To Pay An Adoption Fee For A Rescue Dog?

Dog Lover - Tuesday, February 28, 2012

We're sharing this post from PetFinder.com as this is a common question that comes up when people are considering adopting a dog from Grateful Dogs Rescue.

I can get a free pet, so why pay an adoption fee?
According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (via the ASPCA), approximately 65% of pet parents in the U.S. get their pets for free or at low cost, and most pets are obtained from acquaintances or family members. The NCPPSP also reports that pets acquired from friends make up more than 30% of pets surrendered to shelters (read the article here).

While getting a "free" pet may seem like a bargain at first, you're then responsible for veterinary costs that shelters and rescue groups usually cover, including:

    •   Spaying/neutering $150-300
    •   Distemper vaccination $20-30 x2
    •   Rabies vaccination $15-25
    •   Heartworm test $15-35
    •   Flea/tick treatment $50-200

    •   Microchip $50 (Read more about what your adoption fee covers.)

These costs can total from $305.00 – $635.00. Grateful Dogs Rescue covers the cost of these type of expenses which it has to raise through donations and fundraising events. The adoption fee rarely covers the total cost of the veterinary care required for each dogs.
